The Niles Police Department recently received a $1,000 donation to help further its commitment to protect and serve the community.
The donation was made on behalf of Steve and Janet Gillispie, owners of Michiana Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc.
The donation will be used by the police department to purchase vests and equipment for officers of the newly organized Niles Community Action Team.
The Niles Community Action Team is a six-member team of Niles Police Officers who are highly motivated and have demonstrated a proactive approach to preventing crime.
The team operates on a part-time agenda in conjunction with the six members’ full-time patrol responsibilities. The team conducts mission oriented police activities within the community to combat street level crimes such as narcotics, robberies and burglaries.
Members also conduct motor vehicle enforcement to include distracted driving, speeding, and drunk driving. The Niles Community Action Team concentrates on offenses and violations that reduce the “quality of life” within the community.
This in part is accomplished by working closely with citizens and community leaders to resolve identified criminal issues.
