LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder ordered U.S. and Michigan flags lowered to half-staff Tuesday on all state buildings and within the state capitol complex in honor of Fred A. Newton Sr., a captain with the Somerset Township Fire Department and EMS who died Dec. 27.
“Fred was a devoted firefighter and will be remembered for his service and commitment to his community,” Snyder said. “I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends and community during this difficult time.”
Newton worked for the Ford Motor Co. in Livonia for 31 years, retiring in 2003. He also served on the Liberty Township Fire Department for 18 years, and was a captain and EMT for the Somerset Township Fire Department for eight years.
This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.
Flags should be returned to full staff Wednesday.
When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
