The two women were reported to have been walking with a horse in the road area near 29655 Allen Road, Dowagiac, Tuesday evening. Biek was driving a 1991 Dodge pickup when he struck the women at a low impact speed, Fitz said.

The women reported Biek’s license plate number to the authorities at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to Michigan State Police.

The women suffered minor injuries and checked themselves in for medical care at a local hospital, where they were later released, police said.

The horse sustained a minor back leg injury, causing the leg to become swollen. Fitz said the horse is recovering at this time.

After he struck the women with his vehicle, Biek refused to respond to authorities who were at his residence on the 28000 block of M-60.

There were reports that Biek may have had weapons in his household. It was later confirmed by authorities that there were four firearms on the scene.

Friends and family of Biek were reported to have worked with authorities to resolve the matter peacefully.

At approximately 9 a.m. Wednesday the Michigan State Troopers who had received a search warrant apprehended Biek without incident.

Authorities have not yet revealed any details as to what Biek’s motive was for harming the women.
