Incumbent soundly defeats write-in candidate

For perhaps the last time, Dowagiac voters on Tuesday selected the person who will represent them in the city clerk’s office.

Incumbent Jane Phillipson Wilson overwhelmingly defeated her write-in opponent, Melissa Clanton, during election night. Wilson received 528 votes from voters across all three wards, compared to 80 votes for her opponent.

The ward break down was as follows:

Ward 1: 143-19

Ward 2: 243-43

Ward 3: 142-18

Wilson, the current office holder, has held the position since March, when she was appointed to replace the retiring James Snow, serving out the remaining eight months left on his term.

Per the terms of the city charter, the city clerk is responsible for maintaining the minutes for meetings of the Dowagiac City Council, planning commission and other city boards. The position also oversees voter registration of residents living in each of the city’s three wards, and serves as an ombudsman between citizens and city administration.

The office holds a four-year term.

However, Tuesday could mark the last time the people of Dowagiac actually elect who represents them as clerk. A proposal to amend the city charter is slated to be on the March 8, 2016, ballot, which, if approved, would change the position of city clerk from an elected official to an appointed office.

This change would not go into effect until the end of the current office holder’s term or a vacancy in the office, though. Phillipson’s term is set to expire in November 2019.
