Edward L. Turtle, 86, years of Holiday, Florida (formerly of Niles and Marcellus) died at 10:10 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at his home following an extended illness.
He was born May 21, 1929, in Niles to Edward M. and Alice Schau Turtle Crocker. After attending schools in Florida and Niles, Ed was employed by New York Central Railroad as a Yard Clerk at the Niles depot. After two years on the railroad in enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, serving seven years in post WWII in Florida, Japan, and England.
After military service he returned to Amtrak working at Niles, Elkhart, and back to Niles depots where he served both as a Clerk and Ticket Agent. He transferred to the Kalamazoo Amtrak depot as Ticket Agent before retiring.
On June 2, 1950, he married the former Patsy Scarborough in Brooksville, Florida. They were blessed with two sons, Larry and Charles (Chuck). The couple celebrated their 65th anniversary 12 days before his passing.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy of Holiday, son Larry (Nancy) of Marcellus, grandchildren Ryan, Derek, and Chad Turtle of Michigan and Celina Price, four great grandchildren, sisters, Donna (Herb) Ochenryder and Jo Ann (Jack) Flock of Niles; step-brothers, Joseph Crocker Niles; and Tom (Lois) Crocker of Apache Junction, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, “Chuck”; brothers, Larry, Gene, Jim (& Jim’s wife Jessie); and step-brother Horace Crocker.
Ed was very active in various organizations in Niles, Marcellus, Holiday & Tampa which included Niles Masonic Lodge 4, transferring to Tampa Bay Masonic Lodge. He was president of the Tampa Shriners, veterans’ organizations including American Legion, VFW and AM Vets in Michigan and Florida.
According to his wishes cremation has taken place. There will be no service.
