Joyce E. Hahn, 88, formerly of Niles, Mich., and Portage, Mich., died at 5:47 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013 at the Cass County Medical Care Facility near Cassopolis, Mich.

She was born on Nov. 27, 1924 in Mishawaka, Ind., to Charles and Bertha (Giel) Henigsmith. She was graduated from Mishawaka High School, and attended a nurse’s school in Chicago.  She lived for many years on Saint Joseph Avenue in Niles before moving to Portage.

In Niles, Joyce was a volunteer with the Pawating Hospital Auxiliary (now at Lakeland Community Hospital) and assisted with the Red Cross blood drives.  In Portage, she was active in the garden club and the quilt club.  She enjoyed playing the piano and organ, and more recently had been active in a handbell choir.

On Aug. 31, 1946 in Mishawaka she married Frederick James Hahn with whom she celebrated the sixty-sixth anniversary of their wedding prior to his death on Dec. 27, 2012.

Surviving family includes their children, Rebecca (& Jerry, Sr.) Schley of Dowagiac, Mich., Gary (& Deborah) Hahn of Saline, Mich., Beth (& John) Martz of Big Rapids, Mich., and Gregory Hahn of Shelby Township, Mich.; grandchildren, Jerry (& Karla) Schley, Jr., Gregory Schley, Marla (& David Poytinger) Hahn, Andrea Hahn, Caleb (& Ashley) Martz, Erick (& Stephanie) Hahn, and Dana Hahn, and five grandchildren.

Also surviving are Fred’s siblings, Erma Jane Willman of Crown Point, Ind., Frances (& Rev. Charles) Frances of Franklin, Ind., Mary Hahn of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Maurice (& Bobbie) Hahn of Niles.

The funeral service for Joyce Hahn will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. Fran Lane-Lawrence of the First Presbyterian Church of Niles officiating.  Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.

The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.  Contributions in memory of Joyce Hahn may be made to the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105.
