Monty Ray Hillyer Sr., 51, of Niles died on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Hospice House in South Bend following a brief illness.
He was born April 6, 1961, in Niles to Gerald “Red” and Beverly (Singleton) Hillyer.

Monty was a U.S. Army veteran. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and helping those around him.  He enjoyed taking car rides and also being outside.
He is survived by his fiancée, Sue Kane-Welling, of South Bend; a son, Monty Ray Hillyer, Jr., of California, and a daughter, Nashaunda Hillyer, of South Bend, two stepchildren; Jeremey (Kim) Welling and Krystal Welling, both of Niles; parents, Gerald “Red” and Beverly Hillyer, of Niles; eight grandchildren, Adriana Young, Jonty Ray Hillyer, Haylea Welling, Raven Biggs, Jacob Welling, twins Skylynn and Leo Welling and Gwen “Gwenny-bean” Rosenhagen.
Also surviving is a sister, Deb (Don) Carpenter, of Niles; and nieces and nephews, Donny, McKenzie, Shadd, Zach and Bobbi Jo.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Hillyer.
The family will receive relatives and friends for a time of remembering and sharing from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles and will conclude with the Veteran’s Flag Presentation and “Taps” by the U.S. Army Honor Guard at 6:30 p.m.
