Chieftains split with Comstock

Comstock scored all eight of its runs in the final two innings of the nightcap to earn a Wolverine Conference softball split with host Dowagiac Tuesday.
The Chieftains won the opening game 6-5 over the Colts. Dowagiac had to hold off a seventh inning rally by Comstock in that game was well.
Dowagiac led 5-0 in the second game heading into the sixth inning.
The Colts scored five times to tie the score at 5-5, but then gave up two runs in the top of the seventh to the Chieftains.
Trailing 7-5, Comstock scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to earn the victory.
“We were two evenly matched teams tonight,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “Whoever made fewer mistakes won. We made fewer mistakes in the first game and they made fewer mistakes in the second game.
“On a positive note, I thought we hit well tonight and ran the bases extremely well.”
Sierra Herter had a double and two RBIs for the Chieftains in the first game. Kourtney Mitchell also doubled and drove in a run. Kristyn Turner added an RBI single.
In the nightcap, Mitchell was 2-for-four with three RBIs. Amanda Craft drove in a pair of runs for Dowagiac, while Turner and Corinne Kasper both had doubles.
