CASSOPOLIS — A Cassopolis couple was sentenced to a year of probation for possession of cocaine Friday in Cass County Circuit Court.
Brian Waterson, 42, and Pamela Waterson, 47, were found with a small amount of cocaine during a consent search of their home by Cass County child protective services workers in January.
Prosecutor Victor Fitz referred to the couple’s actions as “dumb and dumber” when they allowed a friend to come into their home with cocaine and then doing a line of it with them in December.
Both Brian and Pamela had clean criminal histories, which helped them avoid incarceration for the offense.
Brian’s defense attorney John Magyar said he has known his client since the 1980s and said he was “very surprised” to find out about the conviction.
“It’s completely out of character,” Magyar said.
Both Brian and Pamela showed remorse in their comments, specifically apologizing to their children.
“They mean the world to me,” Pamela said.
Judge Michael Dodge warned the couple that even experimenting with cocaine is destructive.
“Cocaine you can’t fool around with like having a beer,” Dodge said.
