James Carlton, 84

James Lynwood Carlton, 84, of Edwardsburg, passed to his rest Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 18, 1927, in Bradford, Tenn., to W.F. Carlton and Lilly Lee Lackey. He moved to this area in 1948.
Jim worked for Bendix Aerospace in South Bend as a tool grinder. Jim served his country in the U.S. Army and was proud to have represented his nation.
He was married Nov. 9, 1947, in Marked Tree, Ark., to Shirley Marie Connell, who survives.
To this marriage three sons were born: James Thomas, Gordon and Gary.
Surviving are two sons, Gordon, of Cassopolis, and Gary (Rachael), of Elgin, Ill.; and five loving grandchildren, Amy J., Katherine E., Rebekah A., Lucas S. and Scott A. There are two dear great-grandchildren, Emeli and Veda. Also, Jim has two sisters, Mable Stewart and Guinevere Felix, both of Sharon, Tenn.; and two nieces, Charlotte and Janice.
Jim’s parents are deceased, as well as his oldest son, J. Thomas Carlton, in 1997, and a grandchild.
Family and friends gathered from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, 26863 W. Main St., Edwardsburg. On Monday, Feb. 20, family and friends gathered at noon at Ontwa Baptist Church, 69946 Elkhart Rd., Edwardsburg, where the service of remembrance was held at 1 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Mike Elsey, pastor of the church.
Burial followed at Adamsville Cemetery with the U.S. Army Honor Guard folding the flag and playing taps.
