The Brandywine girls’ varsity volleyball team hosted the South Haven Rams Monday night and it gave the visitors all they could handle before falling in five sets, 3-2.

The Bobcats got off to a slow start on the night as the Rams took the first game easily 25-13, but the home team rebounded in the second game, taking it 25-21.

The third set was every bit as good as the second set with the two teams exchanging points back and forth until the Rams finally pulled away for the 25-19 win.

“I thought Jessie Cooper and Ashley DeJonge both did a really nice job of spreading the ball around to our hitters, I thought Ali Wilson in the back row did a nice job of getting the ball up from the barrel position and MacKenzie Shelton did a real nice job of mixing the ball up on the left side. I was proud of the way she played,” said Brandywine coach Carl Greulich.

Once again the Bobcats would bounce back in what was probably their best game of the night on their way to the 25-15 victory, taking the momentum into the fifth and final set.

The momentum didn’t last long as the visitors jumped out to the early lead in the final set before the Bobcats fought their way back to within 6-4. The ’Cats wouldn’t get any closer than three as the Rams pulled away for the 15-7 win and the 3-2 victory on the night.

“We had the side we wanted and actually we had the positioning on them we wanted, as far as matchups,” claimed Greulich. “The girls get nervous late in the game like that and I am trying to teach them confidence. They have got to go after the ball the same way they do in practice, whether it’s the first point or the 15th point. They’ve got to go hard after it and that wasn’t happening.”
