Beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Janet A. Fred, 72, of Vandalia, passed away at 7:55 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 at South Bend Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind.

Janet was born June 3, 1938 in South Bend to the late Eugene and Irma (Gaugler) Young of Niles. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Norman Young.

Janet was a 1956 graduate of Niles High School. She retired in 2005 from the Cass County Medical Care Facility where she worked as a purchasing agent.

She loved the birds and wildlife at her Buck Lake home. She enjoyed traveling, especially to her sons’ homes in Florida.

Janet is survived by her longtime companion, Michael Fox of Vandalia; six wonderful children, Theresa (Dick) Bruens of Vandalia, Melinda (Rob Walters) Fred of Columbia, Pa., Mike (Cindy) Fred of Elkhart, Ind., Gary Fred of South Bend, Tom (Cindy) Fred, and Gail Fred, both of Port Richey, Fla.; three sisters, Joan Truax of Pokagon, Judy (Sonny) Schieb of Knox, Ind. and Gloria (John) Baxter of South Bend; three brothers, Dean Young of El Paso, Texas, Paul Young of Niles, and David (Brenda) Young of Dowagiac; sister-in-law, Dottie Young; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Family and friends will gather Monday, Dec.13, 2010 at Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals from 4 to 8 p.m.

Services will be Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Larry Settle will officiate.

Interment will follow in Smith’s Chapel Cemetery, Edwardsburg.

The family prefers memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
