Lyle D. “Chum” Davis, 77, of Edwardsburg passed away very unexpectedly from an apparent heart attack Friday, May 28, 2010.
Lyle was born Dec. 16, 1932 in Niles, the son of Delbert and Muriel (Ferguson) Davis.
He was a loving husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa. He enjoyed working outside in his yard, reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, watching his grandchildren’s sporting events and in his earlier days, his horses.
Lyle worked for 35 years as an educator and administrator for the San Diego (Calif.) United Schools and for six years as an elementary principal in Marcellus Public Schools before retiring.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kevin Davis; a brother, Lamar Davis; sisters, Gertrude Wade and Gene Fein; and his first wife, Jane Davis.
Lyle is survived by his wife of 17 years, Nancy Lee Grover Davis; his brother, Jack (Fran) Davis, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and his children, Kenneth (Sheila) Davis, of Ramona, Calif., Karl (Salina) Davis, of Golden, Colo., Karen (Fred) Tow, of Lakeside, Calif.; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Davis, of San Diego. He has four stepchildren, Kimberly (Dr. Robert) Mette, of Belmont, Mich., Kraig Grover, of Elkhart, Kevin (Lisa) Grover, of Granger and Kelley (Michael) Engel, of Navarre, Fla. He has several grandchildren, Matthew Davis Scott (Jessica) Davis, John (Katy) Davis and Jeffrey Davis; Amber and Kolton Davis; Megan Beaudoin; Rebecca, Kiara and Korbin Davis; John (Amanda) Mette; Erin and Michael Mette; Mackenzie and Allison Grover; Jennifer (Bradford) Shively; Zachary and Chelsea Engel. Great-grandchildren are Sky Davis and Jack Davis.
Those wishing to pay their respects fathering on Tuesday, June 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, 26863 West Main St. (U.S. Highway 12), Edwardsburg. The service was held Wednesday, June 2 at 11 a.m. at Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Scott Scheel, pastor, and the Rev. Clearence Dycus, a retired Baptist minister, officiating. The United States Navy Honor Guard played “Taps” and folded the flag.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, the American Cancer Society, Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church or Cass County Animal Control for assistance.
