Eula J. “Dee” Velthouse, 87, of Dowagiac, passed away at 5 a.m. Sunday, May 30, 2010, at her home with her family by her side. She was born July 25, 1922, to Fred and Donna (Canard) Greenway in Mountain View, Ark.
According to her wishes there will be no visitation. A private funeral for the family will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Yazel and Clark Chapel with Pastor Jon DenHouter of First Christian Church officiating.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 121 Oak St., where she and her husband Ralph are members.
Dee was very active in local and state politics for many years and stayed up with all current events until her death. She enjoyed a good debate and her weekly political discussions with her niece, Mary Jane Howard of Clinton Township, and her nephew, Toby Brooks of Dowagiac.
She is survived by: her husband of 68 years, Ralph Velthouse of Dowagiac; her daughter, Linda Kapp of St. Joseph; grandson, Scott ‘Kate’ Kapp of St. Joseph; great grandchildren, Chelsea, Katie, Grant and Garrett, all of St. Joseph. Also surviving are: her sister and brother-in-law, Judy (James) Dodd of Dowagiac; many cousins, nieces and nephews, especially Toby and Tammy Brooks, Tracy and Ron Galbreath and very special family friend Vernon Mueller of Baroda, all of whom helped the entire family tremendously.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son-in-law Greg Kapp and her three brothers, Hayden, Joseph and Sam.
“Dee Tee” as she was known to her family will be missed more than mere words can express.  She devoted herself to caring for others and especially her husband 24 hours a day, seven days a week, during the last months of her life and only accepting minimal help. “Rest now Mom as no one deserves it more. How lucky were all of us to have you in our lives as a mother, grandmother, sister and wife. Love You More.”
