Former University of Pittsburgh coach and Notre Dame defensive coordinator Serafino “Foge” Fazio lost his battle with cancer Wednesday.

Fazio, 71, coached the Panthers from 1982 until 1985. He joined Lou Holtz’s staff at Notre Dame and served as defensive coordinator in 1986-87.

Fazio was the principal speaker at the Dowagiac All-Sports Banquet in 1987.

He left Notre Dame for the National Football League, where he was a coach for the Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings, where he replaced Tony Dungy as the defensive coordinator.

After coaching stops at Washington and Cleveland, he retired from football in 2002. He also served as a consultant to Vikings’ coach Mike Tice.

His funeral will be Monday in Moon Township, Pa.
