BUCHANAN – There was no question about who was the class of the Buck Classic on Saturday.

Allegan nearly doubled up on Armada to capture the title.

The Tigers, a Wolverine Conference powerhouse, scored 72 points compared to just 39 for Armada. Otsego, another Wolverine Conference school, was third with 36 points.

Marshall took fourth (34), Chelsea fifth (31), Almont sixth (28), Lakeshore seventh (35) and Buchanan eighth (19).

Allegan won three out of the four singles flights and the No. 4 doubles championship.

“This was one of the most overall competitive tournaments we have played in a long time,” Buchanan coach Steve Bender said. “Allegan overwhelmed the other seven teams with points, but they were taken to the test in every flight. With four different schools winning flight championships, the points were spread out and team places two through eight were very tight.”

Buchanan did have some bright spots despite no titles.

Derek Blank went 2-1 at No. 4 singles and won the consolation championship.

Bender was also pleased with the performances of his N. 1 doubles team of Ryan Henckel and Josh Whitfield, his No. 2 doubles team of John Haslock and Jake Welsh and the No. 3 doubles duo of Corey Thompson and Alex Kuhn.

“This was a great learning experience for our team,” he said. “In tennis you must play tough competition to get better and this is why we invited so many strong teams.”
