Brawley adds dean of students to his title

The Cassopolis Board of Education named Matt Brawley as its Dean of Students for the 2013-14 school year at its regular meeting Monday night.

Brawley, who is already the district’s athletic director and baseball coach, will step out of the classroom to take on his new role.

He replaces Hiawatha Francisco. The board officially accepted his resignation Monday night. Francisco is now employed with the Niles School District.

“I’m excited for the opportunity and thankful that Cass had enough faith in me to take this job on,” Brawley said. “I will miss being the classroom. You always have a different relationship in the classroom with students than you do as an administrator, but you can still develop good relationships with the kids.”

The board also accepted the resignation of Kristen Powell, who was the varsity softball coach last season.

Ross Beatty Jr./Sr. High School Principal Bob Sieko reported to the board that the Advanced Placement (AP) scores had come in and Cassopolis had an AP Scholar in recent graduate Molly Moroz.

Sieko said that 23 students took the AP tests and the district averaged a score of 2.4 out of five in literature and 1.8 in calculus.

Food Services Director Robyn Bright reported to the board that the summer meal program served 5,972 meals this year.

During new business discussion items, the board learned that a lease agreement had been reached with Clyde Prestly for a portion of Red Brick School to begin an aquaculture business.

In closed session, the board discussed its negotiations with the Cassopolis Education Association.
