Former Dowagiac standout Andy Staten made headlines when he enrolled at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo.

He made headlines because the college freshman was 38 years old.

Not only was he older than some of the coaches, including head coach Jeff Duvendeck, he hadn’t played college football in nearly two decades. His story captivated local television stations and the story began to spread throughout the country.

Now, Staten has graced the pages Muscle & Body magazine. Jake Rossen wrote the article that appeared in an issue released the first week of January.

“They heard about me from the interview I did with the local NBC station,” Staten said. “The editor is out of New York, but the magazine is based in Los Angeles.”

Staten has never been one to shy away from attention. But doing the magazine article was more about promoting the college than himself.

“If it helps the school, I’m all for it,” Staten said. “After all, for what this school has done for me, I owe them.”

Staten said that he sat down with Rossen at a table and talked at great length about his life. He also said he has to spend about 20 minutes in front of a camera.

Staten played all but two games this past season for the Wildcats, who ended up with a losing record, but started 17 freshmen.

Despite missing those games with a staff infection in his knee, he earned honorable mention All-Heart of America Athletic Conference honors. Culver-Stockton finished with a 3-8 overall record and a 2-7 mark in conference play.

“It went real well,” Staten said about his season. “Being named honorable mention isn’t too bad for an old man.”

Staten is already looking forward to next season. After spending some time back in Dowagiac for the holidays he is back in Missouri and back in the classroom where he has “the highest grade-point average I have ever had.”

Staten said that with all those returning starters, better times are ahead for the Wildcats.

“This has been a life-changing experience for he,” he said. “I am so lucky to have gotten this opportunity.”
