Otto “Herb” Anderson, 100, of Dowagiac, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, at his winter home in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.

A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at Clark Chapel & Cremation Service, 405 Center St., Dowagiac with the Rev. Patricia Bromberek officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Dowagiac. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Herb was the oldest of five siblings, born June 18, 1916, in Gladstone, to Otto and Hilda (Major) Anderson.

He met Edith DeWitt in Muskegon, and they were married in Falmouth, Massachusetts, in 1942, right before Herb left to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in Africa, Italy, France and Germany.

After the war, Herb and Edith moved to Pontiac and had their daughter, Pam. They moved to Dowagiac in 1956 after Herb was transferred by the Social Security Administration to work in the newly opened Benton Harbor office.

Herb was a Dowagiac City Councilman in the early 1970s until his move out of the city to Cable Lake. He was active in the Dowagiac Lion’s Club for almost 60 years (he was apast president in 1963), and was a member of Federated Church and the Dowagiac Elks Lodge. Herb was an avid golfer, fisherman, tennis player, square dancer and coffee buddy.

Herb is survived by his daughter, Pam (Jack) Revette; granddaughters Robin (Steve) Fowler and Lynn (Jacob) Garcowski; great-grandchildren Pia and Hazel Garcowski, and Marshall and Auggie Fowler; a sister, Elaine Schettle; a sister-in-law, Doris DeWitt; and many close nieces and nephews.

Herb was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 70 years Edith Mary (DeWitt) Anderson.
