Dwight Alan Cohen

Dwight Alan Cohen

He was born on October 26, 1951 in South Bend, Indiana to Alan Louis and Delores (Casaday) Cohen and was raised on the Casaday Family Farm in New Carlisle, Indiana. He was graduated from New Prairie High School, and attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He has lived in Niles since 1976, and was first employed in the kitchen of the former Franky’s Restaurant, later working in the kitchen of the Elks Lodge. For over twenty years he has owned and operated the Billiard Garden in Niles.

Dwight’s game was three cushion billiards, an exceedingly difficult game. He played it well, and hosted other area players at the Billiard Garden. He enjoyed the fictional character, “Minnesota Fats” from Walter Tevis’ novel, The Hustler and sought to follow many of those behaviors just as the real-life pool player, Ralph Wanderone did very successfully. He was also interested in horse racing, once owning a share of a harness horse; and had practiced handicapping many sports.

Surviving family includes his mother, Delores Daily of Westfield, Indiana; brothers, Jeff (Judy) Trumble of LaPorte, Indiana and Bruce (Judith) Cohen of Granger, Indiana and sister, Carla (Michael) Waite of Westfield, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alan Louis Cohen and a brother, Michael Cohen.

The Catholic Funeral Liturgy for Dwight Cohen will be read at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles by the Rev. Alphonse Savarimuthu, MSFS of Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles. Committal will be private at the New Carlisle Cemetery.
