Donald John Higley, 88, formerly of Edwardsburg and Dowagiac, passed to his rest Feb. 7, 2015, at Silverbrook Manor, Niles, after an illness.

He was born in Calvin Twp., Cass Co. on Dec. 28, 1926, the son of Arthur J. and Maude (Woodin) Higley, and has lived in this area all of his life.

Don was a carpenter and builder, working for himself, and later for the Carpenter’s Union of South Bend. He was a land developer in Edwardsburg, as well as a former Real Estate Salesman for Gallery of Homes. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, being a 32 degree Mason.

Don had two marriages. His first was to Reva J. Klinkhammer, and this ended in divorce. In April of 1987, he married Ollie Marie Furlong, and she passed. Surviving Don are his children; Dr. Dana (Diana) Higley of Three Rivers, Deborah (Denny) Rerick of Cassopolis, Diana Vermeulen of Edwardsburg, Craig (Paula) Higley of Nappanee, Jane Ellen (Bruce) McCrory of Granger and Susan (Jack) Rinehart of Edwardsburg. There are 24 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Don’s family who have passed are his parents, his second wife, Marie and his siblings; Leona, Berdine, Russell, William, Arthur, Millard, Stan, Alford and Harold.

Family and friends may gather at the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, 26863 West Main St., Edwardsburg, on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015 from 1 to 2 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Donald will be later buried at Adamsville Cemetery, Edwardsburg, in the Spring of 2015.
