Carney Long

He served his country courageously in the US Army during WWII. Carney stormed the beaches of Normandy and earned a Bronze Star in the Battle of the Bulge. He took great pride in being a soldier and felt it a great honor to be an Army veteran. Shortly after his discharge he courted and married the love of his life Marie Killarney on June 28, 1947, at a ceremony in Niles.

Carney enjoyed camping, hunting, archery, and target shooting. He was an avid Notre Dame fan, NASCAR enthusiast and outdoorsman; other pastimes Carney relished included bowling, playing pool, playing cards and most importantly spending time with family and friends. Carney made friends easily and no one walked away a stranger. He was a man of faith and a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Marie, his brother Cody Long, and his three sisters; Freida Kettlehut, Velma Sears, and Irma Hentsch.

Surviving Carney are his four sons; John (Lynn) Long of Roswell, Georgia, Gerald (Tammy) Long of Niles, Joe (Debbie) Long of Niles, and Randy (Kim) Long of Mishawaka; two daughters Carol (Dan) Smothermon of Niles and Kathy Long of Cornelius, North Carolina. He will also be missed by his 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and his brother-in-law and lifelong friend Howard (Shirley) Killarney of Niles.
