Southwest Michigan has chance to reverse damage

Published 9:00 am Thursday, October 16, 2014

On Nov. 4, Southwest Michigan voters will have an opportunity to elect an outstanding group of Democratic candidates for national and state offices.

These candidates are committed to reversing the considerable damage done by U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, Gov. Rick Snyder and the Republican-controlled state legislature. They are opposed to the destructive policy of “trickle-down” economics, which has led to a relentlessly increasing divide between the wealthiest 1 percent of the population and the 99 percent majority. They are opposed to tax breaks for big business and wealthy campaign contributors and to tax increases for the middle class.

They are opposed to cutting funding for public education. They are opposed to weakening laws that protect our health and safety and our precious natural environment. They are opposed to passing laws that restrict the civil and voting rights of our state’s citizens.

The Democratic candidates have presented specific plans for moving our state forward by growing the economy from the middle out, not the top down; by helping to spur the growth of good-paying manufacturing jobs in high-growth industries; by investing in our roads and bridges; by supporting public education at all levels; by protecting the environment; and by guaranteeing the voting and civil rights of all citizens. These candidates will bring a new, and much-needed, perspective to our national and state government.

On election day, Tuesday, Nov. 4, please join me in voting for Gary Peters for U.S. Senator; Paul Clements for U.S. Representative; Mark Schauer for Governor; Mark Totten for attorney general; Godfrey Dillard for secretary of state; Bette Pierman for state senator and Dr. Eric Lester for state representative.
