Edward “Doc” Novak, 92, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, in Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Ed was born Feb. 14, 1922 in Whiting, Indiana, the son of Vincent and Anna (Leonard) Novak.

He was an electric lineman for Fruit Belt and was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a life member of the VFW Celery City Post No. 6248, of Decatur.

He married Naomi “Nome” Kiekenapp on Feb. 27, 1943, in Whiting, Indiana, and she survives.

Also surviving are fours sons, Lance (Laura) Novak, of Dayton, Ohio, Chris (Joan) Novak, of St. Joseph, Michigan, Carl (Barbara) Novak, of Wyoming, Michigan and Scott (Carol) Novak, of Dowagiac; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, a brother, Fr. James Novak and a sister, Judy (Ken) Zapf, both of Kalamazoo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leonard Novak.

Visitation was held Friday, Sept. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Newell Funeral Home, Decatur. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Decatur, with Father Patrick Craig as celebrant.

Military rites conducted by VFW Celery City Post #6248 and American Legion Post No. 309 of Decatur, followed the services.
