George F. Whitfield, 78, of Syracuse, passed away Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at the NYS Veteran’s Home in Oxford.

He was born in Berrien Springs, Michigan to the late Merril and Mary Elizabeth (Kelly) Whitfield. He graduated from Niles High School in 1954.

George was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1955 to 1958. He was an avid golfer and baseball and basketball fan.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Rosemary Hawkins.

He met and married Lynda Kelly and moved to New York City.

George is survived by two daughters, Janet Hartman, of Baldwinsville, and Tracey (Paul) Bertelli, of Weedsport; a son, Micahel, of New York City; four grandchildren, Kristin Ashley and Matthew Corey Kavanaugh, Nicholas Mark and taylor Jade Hartman; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Paxton; three sisters, Marilyn Bierwagen and Judy Spychalski, both of Michigan and Genevea Rogers, of Durham, North Carolina, a cousin, Delores Whitfield, of Elkhart, Indiana, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 6 with services to follow at 10 a.m. at Bagozzi Twins Funeral Home, 2601 Milton Ave., Solvey, New York.
