A 12-year-old Niles resident was killed in a one-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning, according to Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr.

Adrian Matthew Chiquito, 12, of Niles was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Chiquito was a passenger in the vehicle driven by 14-year-old Brandon Zachary Burr, also of Niles.

Burr was reported to be in critical condition at an area hospital.

That crash was reported at 2:05 a.m. The vehicle was heading east on Bertrand Road in Milton Township, Cass County. Authorities believe Burr lost control of the vehicle due to speed and road conditions, causing the vehicle to leave the road and strike a tree.

SMCAS Ambulance, Niles Township Fire Department and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department assisted deputies at the scene.

Burr and Chiquito both were wearing seatbelts.

The accident remains under investigation.
