Michigan, Michigan State advance

AUBURN HILLS — Michigan and Michigan State both advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday.

The Wolverine made short work of 13th-seeded South Dakota State 71-56 Thursday night at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Michigan shot 51 percent from the floor, including 45 percent (9-of-20) from 3-point range.

Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glenn Robinson III both scored 21 points to lead the Wolverines.

Michigan will face Virginia Commonwealth Saturday. Tipoff is set for 12:15 p.m., and the game will be televised on CBS.

The Spartans kicked off the NCAA tournament with a 65-54 win over 14th-seeded Valparaiso at The Palace Thursday afternoon.

Derrick Nix led the way for Michigan State with 23 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

The Spartans used a 26-5 run in the first half to seal the fate of Crusaders.

Michigan State will face Memphis Saturday at 2:45 p.m. The game can be seen on CBS.
