Motorcycle rearends slowing car on M-51

Deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded at 11:10 a.m. Thursday to a traffic incident involving a motorcycle and a car on M-51 south of Edwards Street in Pokagon Township.

A vehicle being driven by Donald St. Cin, 64, of Benton Harbor was southbound on M-51. St-Cin was slowing down to make a right turn into a private driveway when his car was rearended by a motorcycle operated Robert Schmeltz, 46, of Dowagiac.

Both Schmeltz and St. Cin were transported to Borgess Lee Memorial hospital in Dowagiac for treatment. Due to the seriousness of Schmeltz’s injuries, he was later transported by Air-Care to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment.

St. Cin was wearing a seatbelt. Schmeltz was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Alcohol was not a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
