Arnold E. Garrelts, 90, of Dowagiac, passed away on Saturday Sept. 18, 2010, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Battle Creek.

Arnold’s life began on Feb. 1, 1920, in Cassopolis, the son of David O. and Emilie (Miller) Garrelts. 

He served his country proudly in the Army Air Corps during World War II. 

Arnold was united in marriage to the former Helen Bell on June 13, 1942, in Douglas. 

He was employed at Bendix and American Vitrified as a truck driver, then supervisor and trouble shooter for the company. 

He was a member of the American Legion and supported all veteran groups. 

His loving family includes: his wife of 68 years, Helen Garrelts; his children, Arnold W. “Spud” (Barbara) Garrelts of Dowagiac, Kyle E. (Glen Richardson) Syx of Dowagiac, Sharon ( George) Cairns of Dowagiac, David Garrelts of Richmond, Ky., and Alan (Patricia Wirick) Garrelts of Dowagiac; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, James Garrelts of Niles.

Arnold is preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. 

His family will gather with friends on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Yazel and Clark Chapel, where his funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. led by Pastor Justin Shepard.

He will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery with military honors.
