The Rev. Frederick Smith, 91

The Rev. Frederick T. Smith, 91, of Niles went home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 21, 2010 at Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles.

Smith was a Purple Heart veteran of World War II. He was a pastor of a few churches and retired from South Niles Community Church at age 85. He attended Grace United Methodist Church, served on the committee of The Old Rugged Cross Historic Site and Gardens, was a chaplain at Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles, a member of the American Legion and Lions Club and a Boy Scout leader.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, five sisters and twin infant siblings. He is survived by two brothers, Garth (Beverly) Smith, Franklyn (Betty) Smith; a sister, Lenna Vay (Calvin) Devitt; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 11 a.m. at The Old Rugged Church in Pokagon, Michigan with the Rev. Jeffrey L. Whittaker officiating. A time of visitation will begin one hour prior at the church. Military honors will be provided at the interment at Ft. Custer National Cemetery on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 10 a.m.
