Brenda L. Smith, 63, of West Bertrand Road in Niles, died at 7:55 a.m. Monday, March 15, 2010 at Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles following an extended illness.

Brenda was born Feb. 1, 1947 in Harrisburg, Ark. to Alton Lee and Flossie Pauline (Dickerson) Allred. She graduated from Berrien Springs High School and lived in this area most of her life.

She was employed for four years at the former Berrien General Hospital (now Lakeland Specialty Hospital) in Berrien Center, Mich.

Brenda was a devout Christian. She enjoying crocheting we well as other arts and crafts, which she sold from her home. She enjoyed nature and wildlife, especially “her” deer in the yard, and flower gardening.

On Feb. 21, 1970 in Mishawaka, she married Kenneth D. Smith, who survives.

Brenda is also survived by her mother, Flossie Allred, of St. Joseph; brothers, Kevin (Pattie) Allred and Daryl Allred, both of Berrien Springs; sisters, Kila Allred, of Grand Rapids and Karen (Brian) Clarke, of Las Vegas; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Alton Allred, who died in 2009; a brother, Doug Allred, who died in 1990; and Doug’s twin, who died in infancy.

Funeral services for Brenda L. Smith will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with Pastor Glenn D. Jerrell of Grace Reformed Church in Walkerton, Ind. officiating.

Internment will be at Union Cemetery in Berrien Center.

The family will receive relatives and friends beginning two hours prior to services at the funeral home Thursday.
