Donald Pompey, 85, born and raised in Dowagiac, was one of seven sons born to Benjamin Clifford and Blanche May Harris Pompey.

One brother, Ben Pompey, survives.

Don served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946 as a technical sergeant over a tank command in Europe.

Don drove semi-tractor trailers for many years across the United States, ending his career operating heavy equipment for the Cass County Road Commission.

In 1961, he married Gretchen Celeste Baker, who preceded him in death.

He helped nurture and support three adopted children, Lynn (Carl) Barrett, Howard (Jackie) Baker and Rohn (Yvonne) Baker.

He was grandfather to Sonya, Stacey, Geoffrey, Carl II, Howard III, Christina, Paul, David and Max.

Services took place Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Greater Love Tabernacle, C.O.G.I.C., Detroit.
Interment was in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.
