Lyle’s life began on March 2, 1920, in Kalamazoo, the son of Ed and Laura (Goings) Nichols.

Lyle, 89, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Dowagiac, was employed by Clark Equipment Co. in Buchanan, working in the foundry for many years.

Lyle served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing service in the Pacific Theater and in Africa.

He was united in marriage to Annie Ruth Nichols on Aug. 28, 1940, in South Bend. Ind. She precedes him in death.

Lyle was married a second time to Nellie Jackson, who survives.

His loving family includes: his wife Nellie of Atlanta; children, Lyle (Beverly) Nichols of Dowagiac, Michael (Lisa) Nichols of East Point, Ga., Delores Bonds of California, Barbara Johnson of South Bend and Irene Nichols of South Bend; foster children and caregivers Megan, Omar and Terrence; many grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives.

Lyle passed away on Oct. 14, 2009, at South Fulton Medical Center in Atlanta.
He is preceded in death by his first wife Annie Ruth Nichols and three brothers, Lawrence, William and James Nichols.

His family will receive friends on Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home, where his funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday led by the Rev. Tyrone Pace of Second Baptist Church.

Lyle will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.
