Edwardsburg junior quarterback Dante Razzano drew high praise from his coach Kevin Bartz after the Eddies rallied beat Berrien Springs, 42-21, in Wolverine Conference West Division action on Friday.

Razzano rushed for 96 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns, completed all three of his passes for 40 yards with two touchdowns and had two interceptions to help the Eddies improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Wolverine Conference West Division.

Edwardsburg clinched a share of the division title with the win and can clinch its second straight outright division title with a win next Friday at Coloma.

“Dante has been phenomenal the last month or so,” said Bartz. “He’s been great running the ball and throwing the ball. He’s getting stronger and stronger and making good decisions.”

Edwardsburg had no trouble moving the ball against Berrien Springs’ defense. The Eddies totaled 451 yards rushing and had 25 first downs.

For the Eddies, Isaiah Miller rushed for 111 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown rushing and two receiving. Dustin Vires added 76 yards on the ground on 11 carries, while Damion Pompey rushed 72 yards on five carries with a touchdown.

“Offensively, we didn’t have much problem moving the ball all night,” Bartz said. “A lot of credit goes to coach (Andy) Jordan and the offensive line. They did a tremendous job. We felt if we got a couple stops on (Berrien Springs) that they couldn’t stop us.”

Those defensive stops came in the second half as Edwardsburg struggled to contain Berrien Springs’ offense in the first half. The Shamrocks, who fell to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the West Division, rushed for 174 yards in the first half and went into halftime with a 21-20 lead.

The Eddies played much better on defense and held the ball on offense in the second half. The Shamrocks were held to 55 yards on 13 plays in the second half. The Eddies ran 33 plays in the second half.

“Mainly, we made adjustments defensively,” Bartz said when asked about what he said to his team at halftime. “We were getting beat straight up the middle. We didn’t have enough size in there. We took our nose guard Terek Curtis and moved him back as a linebacker and got (Chad) Durham in there up front. That gave us some more size inside and kind of shut them down. We felt better when they bounced it outside running. We felt that we had a little more speed with our corners and safeties coming up there.”

The game began with Berrien Springs getting an 88-yard kickoff return from D’Andre Taylor.

“We’ve had a couple of those against us,” Bartz said. “We’ve been working on it. We’ve had trouble up the middle. and we’ll make some more changes on that.”
