Broncos facing third Big Ten opponent

KALAMAZOO — For the second straight week and the third time this season, the Western Michigan football team will hit the road to face a Big Ten opponent.

This Saturday the Broncos are off to Iowa City, Iowa to face the Hawkeyes, who are 2-1 heading into the contest.

The game will air live on the Big Ten Network beginning at 12:01 p.m.

Western Michigan is 0-3 this season having lost to Michigan State, Nicholls and last week to Northwestern, 38-17.

 

WMU football notes of interest

• Western Michigan is playing its third Big Ten opponent over the first for weeks to open 2013 season

• WMU has played Iowa twice since 2002, both on the road

• WMU defeated Iowa, 28-19, in the last meeting on Nov. 17, 2007

• WMU has played the Big Ten in 22 non-conference regular season games since 1996, ranking the highest in Division I-FBS (Iowa will be the 23rd such match up)

• Western Michigan held Northwestern to just 61 yards of total offense in the first quarter after the Wildcats had averaged 193.5 yards of total offense in the first quarter during the first two weeks of the season

• WMU is the first team to hold Northwestern scoreless in the first quarter this season and the first to do so since Penn State led the Wildcats, 3-0, after one quarter on Oct. 6, 2012

• Corey Davis had his second 100-yard game of the season with 112 yards at Northwestern

• Davis and Tyler Van Tubbergen connected on WMU’s first one-play drive of the season, a 75-yard catch and run to give WMU a 10-7 lead in the second quarter at Northwestern

• Van Tubbergen had his fifth multi-TD game of his career with two scoring tosses at Northwestern

• Josh Schaffer has one catch on the season, a 25-yard TD grab last week at Northwestern

• Northwestern started first three drives of game in WMU territory and came away with an interception, a missed FG and a punt

• Mike Jones recorded his first double-digit tackle performance with 10 at Northwestern

• WMU has allowed just one passing TD through the first three games of the 2013 season

• Andrew Haldeman remains perfect in both field goals and PATs after making his lone FG attempt at Northwestern and going 2-for-2 on PATs

• WMU will have its seventh game of the season appear on either the Big Ten Network or the ESPN family of networks with the Sept. 28 MAC opener against Kent State airing live on ESPN3
