EMU’s Ignowski throws second no-hitter

OXFORD, Ohio Former Niles standout Jenna Ignowski pitched her second career no-hitter as Eastern Michigan University blanked Niagra March 17 at the Miami Invitational.

Jenna Ignowski

Ignowski went seven innings without allowing a single hit and striking out seven in the process. Her no-hit performance is the second of her career, as her last feat was accomplished in a 16-0 romping over Western Michigan on April 2, 2011. Not only is her accomplishment just the 13th no-hitter in program history, but Ignowski is also only one of 10 EMU pitchers to keep opposing hitters hitless in a contest.

Katy Blaharski, Allison Scherer and Courtney Loe each posted multiple-hit performances this afternoon, with Scherer driving in two RBI.

Eastern Michigan provided run support for Ignowski early in the contest, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of play. A Blaharski single and a walk for Nellie Coquillard (Niles) put runners at first and second for Amanda Herron. The freshman would plate Blaharski with a single, while Scherer would knock in Coquillard and Herron with a base-knock to center field.

The Eagles would wait until the seventh to tally its final two runs. Jessica Richards started the frame with a leadoff walk and later moved to second on an infield single by Blaharski. McKenna Russ would then blast her 38th career double, which not only provided another run for the Green and White, but it moves her to sixth all-time in the career record books.

Courtney Loe would plate the Eagles’ final run on an RBI-single to centerfield.
