The Brandywine baseball team has begun working with first graders to help improve their reading.

According to Bobcats’ coach David Sidenbender, Caley Coleman contacted him about having some of his players come and work with her first grade boys to improve their reading and reading scores.

“They like baseball, so she thought we could help out by going to her class and reading to and with them,” Sidenbender said. “By doing this, maybe we could build some relationships with them and give them confidence reading. It’s also great for us to be good role models and to know that they are being looked up to by the young kids.”

Each Thursday that they are available, the baseball team will be reading with the first graders for 30 minutes. If the weather permits, the team will also play catch with the boys in Coleman’s class.
