Niles Mayor Mike McCauslin had to break another tie vote regarding the funding of festivals during Monday’s regular council meeting.

With the council deadlocked 4-4 on whether to give $2,500 to this year’s Apple Festival, McCauslin voted against providing the funding.

Last month, McCauslin broke a tie vote by voting not to provide $2,500 to the Niles Riverfest.

“To remain consistent with my previous action I don’t see how I can approve a contribution to this organization and not to others who are just as deserving,” he said.

Like with the Riverfest vote, councilmembers David Mann, Scott Clark, Georgia Boggs and Bill Weimer were all in favor of not providing funding. Dan VandenHeede, Robert Durm, Tim Skalla and Gretchen Bertschy were in favor of funding the festival.

While the city isn’t providing a financial contribution to the Apple Festival, it is providing the use of fire, police and other city services totaling around $4,000.

The city did not give $2,500 to the Apple Festival last year.

A representative from the Four Flags Apple Festival Committee said the festival generated more money than it spent last year. That extra money, he said, goes back into the festival fund.

The festival is scheduled for Sept. 21-29 at the Apple Festival Fairgrounds.

The grand parade is set for Sept. 28 and the youth parade Sept. 21.
