4-H curriculum adds finance

EAST LANSING — Michigan 4-H will soon launch a program designed to educate Michigan youth on the ins and outs of investing, budgeting, credit cards, stocks and many other aspects of personal finance.

The 4-H Build a Million Club curriculum is designed for use by students in grades nine through 12 in classrooms, in out-of-school and after-school programs and in 4-H clubs, groups and camps.

The curriculum has six hour-long units, each containing two to four lessons. Units cover a variety of topics including investing basics, calculating financial risk and finding out what it takes to become a millionaire.

4-H Build a Million Club will boost teens’ confidence in their own ability to handle their finances once they leave the family home. The book’s “do — reflect  apply” design allows youth to test their new skills in a game or activity, reflect with each other about the process and then apply the skill to their own lives.

The accompanying website features youth and educator sections, allowing teen participants and their adult mentors, teachers and parents to explore the world of finance on their own time.
