Edwardsburg blanked by Bulldogs

The Edwardsburg volleyball season ended Thursday night when they lost in the district semifinals to visiting Vicksburg.

The Bulldogs defeated the Eddies 25-22, 25-9 and 25-18.

Though Eddies’ coach Chrissy Breisch was disappointed by the outcome of the match, she was optimistic that her program (which didn’t feature one senior this season) has a bright future.

“It’s frustrating because we had it about as good as you can have it. A bye in the first round, playing at home and a win against Vicksburg would’ve put us in the championship round,” she said. “It just came down to consistency, which we didn’t have, but we’re a young team and younger teams can have trouble with that.”

Facing a 2-0 deficit in the match and their season hanging in the balance, the Eddies started out their third game flat, falling behind 6-0 almost immediately. However, Breisch’s team would show its resiliency by winning the next 10 of 12 points to take a 10-8 lead.

Unfortunately for Edwardsburg, its struggle with consistency reared its ugly head at the most inopportune moment.

With the Eddies using a three-point run to pull themselves to within two at 18-16, the Bulldogs used a 6-0 run that successfully extinguished any hopes of an Edwardsburg rally.

“We won’t dwell on this loss. We’ll reflect on the good things we did this year and hopefully build off of it heading toward next year,” Breisch said. “We went into conference in fifth out of six teams and we’re are hoping to improve upon that standing next season. We know that winning conference and districts is definitely possible.”
