Niles resident target of ‘Mexico scam’

A Niles resident told police he/she received a scam phone call from a person pretending to be associated with the American Consulate in Mexico Tuesday morning.

The caller told the Niles resident one of his/her family members had recently been arrested in Mexico and needed $2,000 to be released, according to a Michigan State Police press release.

The Niles resident said he/she has a family member living in Mexico, but the caller did not come up with the correct full name. Police said it is unknown whether or not this is why they received the call. The caller reportedly spoke fluent English and named their relative by first name. The Niles resident terminated the call and determined his/her relative in Mexico was safe.

The Michigan State Police is reminding residents to be weary of these types of calls. One of the most common scams involves an out of state or out of country medical facility calling about an injured relative, and requesting payment for medical treatment. Police advise residents to obtain as much information as possible and give out as little as possible when receiving a suspicious call.
