Sports in brief: Deadline nears for tennis tournament

The deadline for entering the Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament’s singles competition is nearing.

Now in its 37th year, the singles portion of the tournament will be held July 23-25, while the doubles matches – men’s, women’s and mixed – will be held July 31 and Aug. 1, all at the Dowagiac Middle School courts.

The singles tournament will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 23.

The tournament will continue on Saturday, July 24 at 8 a.m. with the finals scheduled for Sunday, July 25, also beginning at 8.

The deadline for entering the singles tournament is Tuesday, July 20 at 5 p.m. The tournament draw will be posted at the Dowagiac Middle School courts on Thursday, July 22.

The men’s and women’s doubles tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 31. Some matches could be played on Friday, July 30, beginning at 6 p.m.

The mixed doubles tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1.

Entry deadline for the doubles tournament is Tuesday, July 27 at 5 p.m. The tournament draw will be posted at the DMS courts on Thursday, July 29.

The tournament, which still costs just $5 to enter for singles and $10 per doubles team, is open to all residents of Cass County, as well as graduates of the Dowagiac Union School District and current or former members of the Dowagiac Tennis Association.

Werner memorial today at the Lions Club

The late George Werner, who coached the Dowagiac Chieftains from 1978 through 1981, will be honored at a memorial on Friday, July 16 at the Lions Club.

Werner, who died after a lengthy battle with cancer in Florida last month, coached Dowagiac to a 30-6 record during his four seasons, including a perfect 9-0 mark in 1981.

The memorial will be held from 5-9 p.m. and is casual dress according to son Randy Werner. Food will be served.

The memorial is open to the public.
