Eight-year-old Lanie Gist spends most of her free time drawing.

Lanie displayed her painting of flowers and marker and crayon drawing of a seahorse at Dowagiac Union Schools Fine Arts Night Thursday at the high school.

“I like to draw animals,” the Patrick Hamilton student said.

“Her bedroom is covered with drawings,” her grandmother, Melonie Mattix, said.

Fine Arts Night is held in conjunction with the Dowagiac Dogwood Fine Arts Festival. Hundreds of parents, students and teachers attended to see artwork on exhibit and hear the choirs and bands perform in the gym.

Performing were the Dowagiac High School Jazz Band, Sister Lakes, Kincheloe, Patrick Hamilton and Justus Gage Combined Chorus, Dowagiac Middle School Sixth-Grade Band, Dowagiac Middle School Seventh- and Eighth-Grade Band, Dowagiac Middle and High School Combined Choir and Dowagiac High School Marching Band.

Scholarships awarded

Four scholarships were awarded to Dowagiac students Thursday night.

Senior Kirsten Novak won the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival college scholarship for $500 and the Fine Arts Boosters outgoing senior scholarship for $150.

Sixth-grader Jessica Robison received the Bakeman Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp scholarship for $150.

Sophomore Andrea Hatter was awarded the Fine Arts Boosters Blue Lake Camp scholarship for $100.
