DOWAGIAC – The fields may have been small for the men’s and mixed doubles events at the Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament, but the action was exciting.

On Saturday, there was just one match for the men’s championship.

Dave Negron and Mike Urbanski defeated Larry Watson and Kurt Wiesemes in straight sets, 6-4 and 7-6.

The tiebreaker went 7-2.

On Sunday, three mixed doubles teams took to the court at the Dowagiac Middle School for a shot at the title.

In round robin play, Ami Sarao and Larry Watson defeated Shelly Urbanski and Michael McClenahan 6-3 and 6-3.

In the second round, Sue Watson and Scott Marshall defeated Urbanski and McClenahan to set up a showdown in the third and final round for the title.

In one of the better doubles finals in recent memory, Sue Watson and Marshall won a pair of tiebreakers to defeat Larry Watson and Sarao 7-6 and 7-6.

The first tiebreaker went 8-6, while the second was 7-5.
