Ballet ‘Giselle’ twirls to Michiana

In March, Southold Dance Theatre, a regional training company and the resident dance company of the Morris Performing Arts Center, will showcase its production of the ballet classic “Giselle” at Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.

A favorite of ballet enthusiasts, “Giselle” is one of ballet’s most beloved classics and features some of the most technically demanding roles in the genre.

“This is one of the most physically challenging ballets for the corps de ballet,” said Erica Fischbach, artistic director at Southold Dance Theatre, vof Act II of the ballet. “The role of Myrtha is like running a marathon while holding onto free weights. The jumps and the pure classical lines that the body is required to perfect are quite challenging.”

“Giselle” is a ballet with a rich story full of romance and intrigue. Taking place in a village during grape harvest, Giselle, who loves to dance but has a weak heart, falls in love with a newcomer who turns out to be someone in disguise.

The role of Giselle, considered by many to be one of the most demanding roles in ballet, will be played by Luciana Paris, a guest artist from the famed American Ballet Theatre.

Roddy Doble, also from the American Ballet Theatre, will play the part of Albrecht, the other lead role. More than 100 Southold dancers, ranging from ages 6 to 19 years old, will perform in the production.

“Giselle” performances are at the Notre Dame DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children. To order tickets, call (574) 631-2800.
