Cass board considering bond issue

The Cassopolis Board of Education discussed putting a bond proposal in front of voters this spring at its Nov. 24 meeting.

Cassopolis Superintendent Tracy Hertsel said that the building and grounds committee met earlier that evening to discuss the proposal for scope and cost of a facility study.

“We set aside $10,000 to perform a study, but at the last committee meeting a larger scope was developed and this added to the cost of the study,” he said. “One thing that was added after the last committee meeting were the high school gym basketball rims and backboards, which are a safety concern. They are currently out of compliance with the MHSAA and need to be addressed.”

Hertsel added that buses were discussed, but due to their depreciation value, it was decided not to add them to the bond.

Hertsel told the board that it must decide by February whether or not they wish to pursue a bond to be on the May ballot.

“So time is of the essence,” he said.

At its meeting Monday night, the board hired Teresa Wellman as its Science Olympiad coach, Andrew Brawley as its new baseball coach, Scott Turnbow as the middle school wrestling coach and Erin Westrate and Lindsay Gorham as winter varsity cheerleading coaches.
