The words “braces” and “comfort” are rarely used in the same sentence.
But one Niles orthodontist prides himself on offering treatment that is as gentle as possible.
Dr. Ed Guyer, who has been practicing at Main Street Orthodontics in downtown Niles for 23 years, uses the Damon Bracket System when treating his patients.
Main Street Orthodontics was one of the first offices in the Midwest to begin using the system about 10 years ago, which has been updated and improved over the years.
“It’s quite unique,” Guyer said. “It causes the teeth to move faster with a lot less discomfort to the patient.”
Guyer says traditional braces are tied with elastics that cause friction and pressure, while the Damon System uses a mechanism that doesn’t cause that friction.
The appliance also can expand people’s smiles.
“It just does some amazing things with the face,” he said. “If you look at the faces of the patients before and after, the face broadens out.”
Guyer says the treatment rarely requires tooth extraction to eliminate crowding.
“Some orthodontists take four teeth out to reduce crowding,” he said.
The braces system has produced results for the office, as it expanded with a branch in northern Berrien County several years ago.
Guyer says it’s a joy for him when patients get their braces off.
“The biggest satisfaction I get is finishing up people’s treatment. We give them a party,” he said. “It’s just seeing their faces light up.”
