Police make arrests in gas station armed robbery

A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of two suspects who allegedly robbed a Berrien County gas station Tuesday morning.

Derek Bishop, 33, and Anthony White, 30, both of South Bend, Ind., are being lodged at the Berrien County Jail awaiting arraignment on a preliminary charge of armed robbery and other charges.

According to Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police, an officer stopped a vehicle on East Lemon Creek Road near Burgoyne Road for a traffic violation around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday. After asking for identification, the officer learned the driver, Bishop, had a suspended Indiana driver’s license. The subjects in the car matched the general description of the suspects in the armed robbery of the BP Gas Station on M-139 in Berrien Springs less early Tuesday morning. As an officer was removing the driver from the car, some evidence from the armed robbery was visible. At this time Michigan State Police Troopers from the Niles Post arrived and assisted by removing the passenger, White, from the car. White had a warrant out of LaPorte County Indiana. A weapon was observed in the car near the passenger seat that matched the description of the one used in the armed robbery.

Both are persons of interest in a criminal investigation being done by troopers from the Michigan State Police Niles Post.

Bishop was also charged with the driver’s license violation.

Paperwork will be turned over to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s office in Niles seeking the armed robbery arrest warrants and other related charges.
