Roundup: Eddies, Vikings remain atop Wolverine; Bucks stung by Bees

PAW PAW — There is one less team atop the Wolverine Conference boys basketball standings following Tuesday night’s action.

Visiting Edwardsburg defeated Paw Paw 53-43 in a battle of undefeated teams, while visiting Niles kept pace with a 65-53 win over Vicksburg.

In non-conference action, visiting Bridgman defeated Buchanan 50-42.

 

Edwardsburg at Paw Paw

Brody Schimpa poured in a game-high 26 points to lead the Eddies to a victory as they improved to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in conference action.

Edwardsburg led 15-6 after one quarter, but was held to seven points in the second quarter as the Red Wolves (2-3, 2-1 Wolverine) cut the lead to 22-15 by halftime.

The Eddies regroup and outscored Paw Paw 31-28 in the second half to hold on for the victory.

Trailing 36-28 after three quarters, the Red Wolves made a run at Edwardsburg in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to six points in the closing minutes, but they could not get any closer.

Besides Schimpa, the Eddies got 11 points from Zeke Pegura and 10 points from Will Moore.

Truman Brennen had 13 points to lead Paw Paw. Aydon Roth added 11 points.

The Eddies return to action Thursday as they travel to Otsego for another Wolverine Conference contest.

 

Niles at Vicksburg

The Vikings (3-2, 3-0 Wolverine) also used a quick start to take control of the game Tuesday night.

Niles jumped out to a 16-7 first-quarter advantage, which it extended to 34-24 by halftime.

The Vikings continued to build upon their lead in the final 16 minutes of play. Niles took a 50-38 lead into the fourth quarter and cruised home with the victory.

Mike Phillips Jr. had a game-high 27 points, while Ethan Chambliss added 13. Brayden Favors and Brenden Olsen both finished with 11 points.

Mitchell Beyer had 19 points to lead the Bulldogs.

The Vikings head to Sturgis for a Wolverine Conference game Friday night before facing Chicago North Lawndale Charter in the Tri-State Holiday Classic at Southwestern Michigan College on Saturday.

 

Bridgman at Buchanan

The Bees (4-0) built a 10-point halftime cushion and then held off a late challenge to defeat the Bucks Tuesday night.

Leading 19-9 at the intermission, Bridgman outscored Buchanan 20-15 in the third quarter to open up a 39-24 advantage with eight minutes remaining.

The Bucks (1-4) came storming back in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead below double figures before running out of time.

Matt Trigg had 18 points for Buchanan. Logan Wiggins added nine.

Chuck Pagel led the Bees with 17 points.

The Bucks host Lakeland Conference rival Brandywine Friday night.
