NILES — As the Michigan High School Athletic Association and the state of Michigan begin reopening high school sports, area football coaches are quickly digesting the guidelines released recently.

One of the top guidelines is that each school district must have completed its school year. For some of them, that is still a week away.

At Brandywine, the Bobcats will host a meeting with parents and players on Wednesday. The mandatory meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Selge Field.

Parents will be informed as to what is allowed under the current Michigan High School Athletic Association guidelines for reopening sports and the state of Michigan Phase 4 guidelines.

Players will then participate in an hour conditioning workout.

Buchanan is pointing at June 15 to begin summer workouts.

“As of now, I believe we will have an athletic department meeting this week with Athletic Director Lonnie Hoover, and then we are scheduled to begin training athletes under the new guidelines June 15,” said Buchanan coach Mark Frey.

Dowagiac second-year coach Randy Brooks has not decided when his team will begin summer workouts.

At Edwardsburg, Kevin Bartz said his team would begin workouts the day after school wraps up June 10.

“We will meet on June 11,” he said. “At that time, we will go through the protocol of requirements listed by the governor and MHSAA. [We will] discuss what we can and can’t do during each phase and then get our workouts going.”

Niles’ final day of school is Thursday. Vikings’ coach Joe Sassano said he is waiting for a plan from the administration on how they want teams to proceed.

“I hope to have a schedule and plan in place this week,” he said.
